EXP2 - Lumion Files and Screen Captures

1. View from inside the Sportspark at human eye level

 2. From inside a car on the M7

 3. Intersecting bridge view

4. Strong presence of the MARKER in the Sportspark

 5. Looking up whilst inside the MARKER

 6. Marker's reflectivity during darker hours

7. Human interaction from inside to outside

Reflection:

I'm glad with how the organic shape turned out. I feel that the amalgamation of these fluid forms are symbolic of the movement and interaction between people in a Sportspark.

The model grounds itself and boasts a strong presence on the earth, whilst also being able to reach up and blend with the cloud forms and nature in the sky.

“Why still speak of the real and the virtual, the material and immaterial? Here these categories are not in opposition, or in some metaphysical disagreement, but more in an electroliquid aggregation, enforcing each other, as in a two part adhesive.”
Lars Spuybroek, [1998] Motor Geometry, Architectural Design, Vol 68 No 5/6, p5

CHOSEN CONCEPTS

  1. light and ephemeral and continually changing with different situations of perception
  2. create reflections of layered spaces with unclear boundaries
  3. relation between the inside and outside

REWORDED CONCEPT // ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION

'With different situations of perception, the relationship between the inside and outside is ephemeral and dynamic. Lightness reflects the ambiguous nature of boundaries within the layered spaces.'

MATERIAL CHOICE//

For the organic shape, I decided to go ahead and choose aluminium mesh to support the light and clean feel to the design. I also wanted the shape to subtly reflect natural light off it, and at night, when there are artificial ground lights, to help pick up the silhouette of the shape.

And for the base, I decided to contrast the top with have a strong robust structure such as reinforced concrete and polished plaster. Just so that it can ground itself and have a strong presence in the Spotspark.

Experimental//

Trial Model Within Lumion//

While designing this model, I decided to go back to my sources of inspiration, which were the concept models we freely sketched in the beginning. I found that the amalgamation of the rectangular blocks were very limiting in the way we could only have 5 blocks in each design. So when I curved one of the amalgamations, I decided scale the shape so that it was thinner, curve it, then duplicate them into ribbon shaped curves and arrange them so that it reflects the fluid, experimental and ephemeral style adopted form SANAA.

Human Experience looking from the Sportspark out to the roads

Human Experience within the Water Tower site

With my final design, I wanted not only for the marker to be striking and prominent for people who use the M7 road, but also for people in the park to be able to interact with it.

With this in mind, I created a marker with height and decided to add an organic symbolic topping to draw attention from a distance, then underneath, leave the rectilinear forms so that people can sit, climb or use as shelter from the weather.

I really sourced my thoughts from SANAA design process, whom believed that the model should maintain a relationship with its surroundings.

With that being said, the organic shape could be very versatile with it's symbolism. Its morphing shape symbolises movement and interaction, something that is very important when thinking about the recreational use of the Sportspark and Blacktown's multiculturalism.

EXP2 Week 7 - Sketchup Artisan Tool and Site

SHAPES IN SKETCHUP//

In the process of my design, I decided to collate the three duplicates of the the organic shape in a way which abstractly represents 'multiculturalism'. I feel that this shape is very versatile with its message, in that it could also promote sustainability - materiality I will talk about later. But for now, I like the idea of multiculturalism, firstly because it's situated in a recreational area, secondly because it allows the diverse community of Blacktown to explore the marker at the human experience.

SITE//

In terms on concept, I tried to relate it to 'relations of inside and outside'.

At birds eye view, the phone tower and the baseball fields have a symmetric and consistent shape which was also the theme I tried to reflect through my design.

EXP2 Week 6 - Concepts and Axos

CONCEPTS// from articles and first impressions

1. 'It is minimal and a matter of fact at the same time' - MINIMALIST/STREAM LINED/PRACTICAL

2. 'create reflections and layered spaces with unclear boundaries' - OPEN SPACES/ LAYERS

3.  'relation between the inside and outside'

4. ' light and ephemeral, and continually changing with different situations of perception'

5.  'to make the exterior a more accurate representation of the interior'

FIRST IMPRESSIONS // At first, I sensed a theme of consistency. SANAA utilises the sterile white facade along with a lot of glass. There is a very contemporary take on light and space. Open spaces, yet stream-lined with the play of rectilinear and curvilinear forms. They manage to be very minimalist without sacrificing a strong relationship between public and privates spaces.

Excerpt from an interview

So you tried to relate the building to its surrounding environment?

S: You always need to think about how a building will look beside its neighbors. Of course, that doesn't mean you should merely imitate them. Neither does it mean you should make the other buildings look bad. The ideal is to create something that, through its presence, makes the overall environment look better, and at the same time makes your own building look good by virtue of its relationship with the surrounding buildings.
